The highly-awaited action entertainer War 2, featuring Hrithik Roshan and NTR, had everything going for it to be a blockbuster. With top-star cast, top-notch production, and the tag of being a member of YRF’s Spy Universe, the expectations were sky-high. But things turned out to be different in reality.
The movie did not generate much buzz prior to release, and when word of mouth (WOM) and reviews began pouring in, they turned out to be overwhelmingly negative. This directly affected its box office gross, resulting in what is now being termed a “weekend disaster.”

Telugu States Performance: A Major Disappointment
One of the biggest surprises emerged from the Telugu states, where NTR has a huge fan base. War 2 was supposed to create waves in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, but the film raked in just ₹37 crore share in its first weekend.
Keeping in mind that the breakeven point for Telugu states was approximately ₹95 crore, the figures are disturbing. Trade experts estimate that the film has nearly finished its stint in Telugu markets, with slim to no chance of recovery in the weeks ahead.
For a movie which had NTR in a pan-Indian venture together with Hrithik Roshan, this performance is below expectations.

Hindi Market Shows Weak Numbers
The Hindi belt has always been Hrithik Roshan’s best bet, and War 2 was made with an eye for that constituency. But even there, the movie disappointed.
The movie was able to make ₹122 crore net in its first weekend in India. Although the figure might impress at first glance, it is far off from the expectations for a movie of such proportions.
The sector was anticipating War 2 to easily cross the figure of ₹225 crore net in its first weekend, but the collections could hardly touch half of that figure.
The poor reaction suggests that the audience wasn’t moved by the narrative or delivery, even with the abundance of action and Hollywood spectacle.
Foreign Box Office: Another Disappointment
Overseas collections also contributed to the underwhelming experience. War 2 managed just about $6.5 million (₹54 crore) on its opening weekend.
For a film that was built up as a global extravaganza and supported by the YRF Spy Universe brand, the performance is well below expectations.
In contrast, the franchise’s past big-budget films and other Bollywood superhits attained better openings in overseas territories. The disappointing international reception further constrains the movie’s opportunities for long-run recovery.
Worldwide Gross and the Larger Picture
Upon consolidating all the markets, War 2 raked in approximately ₹265 crore gross worldwide in its opening weekend. Although this is a sizeable amount, it is well below expectation.
Trade analysts point out that the ₹350 crore hurdle appears very hard to cross at present. With the Telugu states nearing their run and the Hindi belt also not displaying any sturdy weekday support, the movie has an uphill job in steadying its collections.
For a production mounted on such a huge scale, with astronomical production and marketing expenses, this show is a cause for concern. The buyers and distributors are not likely to break even, making it one of the worst openings for a production of this scale.

Why Did War 2 Fail to Click?
A number of factors could have accounted for War 2’s underwhelming opening:
- Weak Word of Mouth – Initial reviews were mixed to negative, and social media responses highlighted weaknesses in the screenplay and the pacing.
- Unmet Expectations – Fans expected a gripping story on par with the action set pieces, but the storytelling lacked.
- High Benchmarks – After the success of the first War (2019) and other Spy Universe movies like Pathaan, expectations were sky-high, making the underperformance more conspicuous.
- Competition and Timeliness – With other movies in contention and audiences becoming choosy about big-screen releases, War 2 couldn’t demand exclusive attention.
Audience Reaction: Fans Show Disappointment
Both Hrithik Roshan and NTR fans had been waiting for this union eagerly. Social media was filled with fan edits and buzz around the release. Yet, the reactions post-watch told a different story.
While one section of the audience applauded the action choreography and screen presence of Hrithik-NTR, the majority panned the poor storyline and insufficient emotional connect.
A few fans even lashed out online, claiming that the movie failed to meet expectations.
What’s Next for War 2?
The path forward is tough for War 2. With its weak opening weekend and absence of strong word of mouth, the movie will require exceptional weekday hold to claw back some ground.
Trade circles, however, indicate that the likelihood of a turnaround is low.
At best, War 2 can dream of decent collections within the Hindi belt, but its performance in Telugu states and abroad is not encouraging at all.
Short of a miracle, the movie is on its way to being tagged as one of the biggest box office flops in recent times.

Conclusion: A Weekend to Forget
War 2 was supposed to be a game-changer, bringing together Hrithik Roshan and NTR in an adrenaline-fueled action thriller. Instead, it has become a weekend flop, grossing just ₹265 crore worldwide against sky-high hopes.
The film’s disappointment underscores the significance of robust content and audience connection, more so than mere star power and spectacle.
For now, fans and the industry will wait to learn if War 2 can maintain some semblance of stability in the coming days—or fizzle out as another lost opportunity.
