Rajinikanth and director Lokesh Kanagaraj collaborated in the much-hyped action drama Coolie that was released in August with high expectations and fanfare. But the ultimate box office story of the film indicates that it did not really live up to the hype. Although Coolie features a star-studded cast and is well-produced, the movie ended its global box office performance with a global gross of 520 Cr, a mediocre performance.
Although the film was not a blockbuster, it was still in the list of the highest earners in Kollywood being the 4th highest grosser after 2.0, Jailer and Leo.
Tamil Nadu: Good Initiation but Censored Certificate
The movie debuted well in Tamil Nadu, and made 152 Cr gross during its movie life. Trade analysts, however, feel that the A certificate restricted its audience, particularly family audiences.
